Local Attractions

Do you enjoy a bit of history, nature and excitement? Walk in the paths of Davy Crockett. Explore a prehistoric Indian fort. Learn about river pirates, counterfeiters and the murderous Jessie James and others. See the forest and Little Grand Canyon and an old Illinois iron furnace. From river cruises to rock climbing bluffs 100’s of feet high, historic caves to stately mansions, it is all just minutes away from Hillcrest Baptist Camp and all of this is FREE! Some camps try to provide repelling, canoeing, fishing, etc., but very few camps match what Hillcrest has to offer just minutes away. Come and see the dogwoods, pink buds and changing of the leaves.

Less than 20 minutes away, beautiful POUNDS HOLLOW RECREATIONAL COMPLEX offers an attractive clean swimming beach, paddle boats, fishing, picnic areas and pavilion, hiking trails with spectacular stone bluffs, prehistoric Indian fort, Indian mounds and horseback trails. Nestled in a deep, wooded valley surrounding a clean, spring fed 25 acre lake, this recreational area is one of the most beautiful sites in the Midwest.

Hike the 3/4 mile trail or drive 2 miles by road to RIM ROCK NATIONAL TRAIL where you can explore an ancient Indian wall and Ox Lot Cave. This is one of the most beautiful trails in the almost 300,000 acre Shawnee National Forest. You can walk the 1/8 mile trail around the top of the rim, the real beauty comes halfway around the rim taking the staircase down through a narrow Indian pasage to a massive rock cliff enclosure and Valley to Ox Lot Cave.

An 8 mile drive through breath-taking scenery brings us to the GARDEN of the GODS, rated by USA TODAY as the #6 site of the 10 great places in the US to capture nature on film.

Other points of interest are Cave-in-Rock State Park, Cave-in-Rock Free Ferry to Kentucky Amish shops, bakery, sawmill, furniture, etc., Tower Rock, the Shawnee Queen, Ohio River Taxi, High Knob Lookout, and an old Illinois Iron Furnace.
